Sugar

I've got sugar in my hair
All in my bangs
And it's starting to feel really weird.

Today I unpacked a box
A box that had my container of sugar
The sugar lid popped off

It got into the flour container
It got into my hats that were packed in that box
It got into the carpet

On the way out the door
Of course in a rush
I threw a hat on my head

Now there's sugar in my hair.

Some Pictures Fo' You

A cup of coffee to set off the day right...

There isn't a picture of the car, but it was filled to the rafters as well.
Everything we own, all waiting to go.

8:38 am, in Blaine Washington

Setting up shop!
Howard is putting together a shelving unit for out storage room.

Spencer putting wooden bars in our windows.
Safe and secure - thanks babe!

Our Craigslist deal.
Solid oak table and chairs - $100

Piles of boxes still standing around, waiting to be unpacked.
But we've got the TV set up to watch Glee!

We took a trip to a fabric store called Cool Cottons
where she carried a large assortment of Favourite Things!

It was fun to see the Gladmans, especially sweet Amy, on the packages in the shop!

The store was visually pleasing to the eye in many ways!
So many fun colours of thread and really great fabrics!

Once my place is tidier and more organized,
I will post more pictures.

Moving

***
Update for you

So we are currently borrowing (wink, wink)
internet from someone else in our building
and it's not a very good connection
It takes WAY too long to upload pictures
So I am sorry to say you will have to wait
until we get our own wireless in here
before I blog pictures.
I know a few of you have asked
to see some pictures of our place
And I promise you,
sooner then later!
Maybe a video, too

Friday we finished cleaning
by early afternoon,
and had some meetings throughout the day
to finish things off in Canada
And I was getting just GIDDY for the
Hanson concert that night.

Edolbina arrived that afternoon
We got ready and took the train downtown
We had a gyro for dinner and headed towards
the Commodore Ballroom.

What happened after that,
I won't even TRY to describe.
My day went from great to bad
 and level of disappointment was
to great to try and sum into a few measly words.
To break it down, I was a day early for the concert.
For some reason, right from the beginning
I had in my mind that the 25th was a Friday
so I didn't even think to double check my tickets
that clearly said
SATURDAY, September 25.

Standing outside the Commodore Ballroom
I didn't know if I should cry,
punch the brick wall
(thankfully, I opted out of that one)
or just sit on the side walk in a heap.

Edolbina did a very good job of comforting me
She knew as much as the next person
how much I'd been looking forward to that night.
Was there a better way to say farewell then to go
see Hanson with Edolbina?!

We lazily walked the streets of downtown
Popping in and out of shops
Occasionally with me moaning
And wanting to scream at myself with frustration
We grabbed a pumpkin spiced flavoured beverage
and hunkered down at a sidwalk cafe
and people watched and talked
She made me laugh,
which was what I needed.

Spencer, Howard and Diane
offered for us to leave on Sunday instead.
So kind of them, but we had prepared too long and too hard
for that Saturday morning.
I just couldn't do it.
I had seen Hanson a year ago,
and I am so thankful for that experience.
I knew that my wish to see them live one day
had already been fulfilled.
I knew we had to move that next morning
and I came to terms
that the show would go on without me.

The next morning we left Delta
at about 7:15 am
Car, truck and trailer loaded with
everything we own heading down Hwy 99 towards the USA
We arrived at the border at about 8
and were on the other side a half an hour later.
The process could not have gone smoother!
Our prayers were answered and it went so well.

We were asked one question at the border
and when Spencer briefly explained our situation
we were directed to park and go inside to the Immigration Office.
At that point we received a text from the 'rents that they
were through and waiting for us in Blaine.
Wow! Praise the Lord!

Spencer and I went inside and waited in a short line.
The friendly officer completed our paper work
and didn't even look through all of our
financial documents we were required to have.
We were in and out in no time.
The drive down was smooth as well
No real traffic jams or back ups and
we made it to Portland in 6 hours.
That includes two stops for coffee and lunch.

By mid-afternoon we had everything unloaded.

God is good.
He is so, so good.

Our place is wonderful.
The grounds are kept beautifully,
the managers are professional and friendly.
Our apartment is bright, spacious and opens to a grassy yard.
We are close to a grocery store
and live in a beautiful neighbourhood.

God is good.

We had a minor hick up with our
washer and fridge.
But all is well.
Our washer/dryer is brand spankin' new
and I get a brand spankin' new fridge tomorrow.

God is good.

We found a church that is just down the street
that we are going to check it out on Sunday.
This evening we went for a nice walk
just up and down the streets in our area.
Everyone we met along the way seemed friendly.
There is a school in the area,
so it seems like there are quite a few families.

Spencer has his first day of school Friday
Our neighbour is a new graduate of UWS
and said if Spencer had any questions
just pop over and ask
(Maybe that's whose internet we are "borrowing"?)

Spencer and I got ourselves cell phones.
There are smokin' deals in the states.
So we are now reachable beyond email

We are looking forward to exploring
our community and new city

So far, so good my friends.

Keep in touch

This Is It

Well, this is it for a while.

Hopefully we will have our internet set up some time next week and I can update you on how everything went.

Tomorrow we are finishing everything up including a BIG clean of the place.

Then, to end the time in Canada PERFECTLY Edolbina and I are going to Hanson tomorrow night!!!

Tomorrow night seems like a million years away (okay, SLIGHT exaggeration) but I am getting so excited.

Sorry that this post contains nothing really exciting.

But honestly, my brain is done, and it's time for bed.

You'll hear from us live from Portland soon!

The Smids

PS: Please pray for - safe travels -efficient unpacking -Spencer's flu
Thanks!

Way Behind

Hey everybody,
Wow, this week (I know, it's only Tuesday) has been busy so far.
I know it's bad, but today I didn't even THINK about eatting anything until we got to Whitt and Dave's for dinner.
One whiff of that roast and I was starving.
Spencer and I have been running around like chickens with our heads cut off
trying to get everything finished.
This includes dentist appointments,
doctor's visits, etc.
all before my benefits are over.

Our little suit is looking pretty grim.
The cupboards are empty and the walls are bare.
There is a mountain of boxes in the living room.
Kind of sad, I'm going to miss that place.

This afternoon I had an hour and a half to relax.
Whitt did my hair.
She gave my hair a bit more shape and took a lot of the weight off by thinning it.
I've never had a hairstyle like this before,
I quite like it.
You guys should check out her website.
If you live in Delta/Richmond - go get your hair done by her.
If you live in the Lower Mainland - make the drive out.
If you live abroad - save your Air Miles and get a great hair cut.
Seriously, one cut and style and you will be sold. ;)
Okay, I MAY be a bit biased, but seriously!

On another note:
I MISSED GLEE TONIGHT!
Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had been looking forward to this evening for so long.
Especially since things have gotten even more hectic the past week,
I thought to myself I would work had just to have that hour to sit and watch Glee.
All day I have been singing show tunes
(in my head, for the mercy of those around me)
and thinking about what's going to happen for the season premiere.
Then at 9 Whitt and I hunkered down and tuned in to channel 32
To our shock and horror -
NO GLEE.
They changed the time to 8:00!!!
WHAT?!
Now I am just going to go to bed.
What else is there?
Somebody tell me please.

(I'm not a drama queen, am I?)
Here's my new do!
(Oh and the fabulous Whitt who did it!)

Canadian Weekend

Happy Weekend!
What are your plans?
Whitney and Dave are hosting a Going Away party for us this evening,
and this afternoon we are going to cheer on UBC as they play Manitoba for their Homecoming game.
We just finished a delicous breakfast that our dear friends Edolbina and Andrew made us.
Enjoying the rain today.

This is our LAST weekend as Canadians for the next few years.
Well, we will be here for other weekends, but as visitors.
Feels kinda weird.

Here are some fun finds from the wonderful world wide web!

A wonderful bright kitchen.

Whitney entered a contest on the Anne Taintor site and her picture was posted second!

Do you miss lazy summer days?
Has the busyness of the fall got you missing the warm sunshine?

I just LOVE this hot water bottle cover!

A brilliant and cute way to store the clutter on the counters.
Now if only I could get my husband to actually put the keys INTO the jar....

Now how much do we love this little girl?
There are no words to describe.

Something about this just makes me love it.

These socks rock my socks.
The colours are so much fun!
They just call out cozy toes and a warm cup of tea.

Henna!

Thrifty Thrift

Inspired

Inspired by my dear friend Edolbina
and her amazing skill at treasure hunting.
She has found so many cool items at the local thrift stores
It makes me wish we had more in Delta!

This is my latest find at the Delta Hospice Thrift Store
This cool glass jar, then I intend to pass on to Darcy, but for now am using as a vase
This vintage Mason jar I am using to house walnuts
And my most recent,
this beautiful tray. It's got such character!

This beautiful dressing table I found for $4.00!!!
Can of white paint - $14.00
Glass knobs - $2.95 each from Anthropologie.com
The drawer that goes into the middle needs to be fixed.
Nothin' a hammer, some nails and one girly girl can't do.
.... I think...

When we move to Portland we need to purchase
a kitchen table, chairs and a coffee table.
I am excited to see what I can find!

Get A Laugh Outta This

Today I saw these pictures on the Pioneer Woman's blog.
She is having a photo contest of the funniest pictures.
These one's cracked me up the most!

Isn't this great?

I just wanted to be a lion..

Was this Spencer's baby picture?! The two of them should get together and discuss how much they hate having their photos taken.
So cute!
Matching heads!

A Not So Typical Saturday Afternoon

Can you believe it? Yesterday there was snow on the Chief.
On a walk down to the Village to take a look at the Porsche's
Doesn't this look like fun?
Later Howard, Diane, Spencer and I drove up to Adams Lake to have dinner with a friend of theirs.
We stopped off at this little country church. It even had a wood burning stove in the centre.
Diane playing the pump organ and Spencer...planning his next sermon?
See the mouse droppings and dead flies (don't forget the droopy flower in the vase)
Ken's cabin had equal amounts of character and charm.
I just loved it.
Ken and Diane preparing dinner.
Ken cooked a roast in a wood burning stove.
Not a bad kitchen window view, eh?
{ these photos of the guys are borrowed from Diane. }
Apparently this old chair has held a lot of bums.
The dinner was yummy and the red jello for dessert was good too. What a beautiful corner of the world.
