Cloth Diapers

Calling all mothers!
Here is my thought of the day -
cloth diapers.

What do you think of 'em?
Don't be shy,
I want your opinions.

Here are my thoughts.
I do not plan on using
regular disposable diapers,
I plan on using ones that are chlorine free
which are a bit more expensive.
But I'd really like to use cloth diapers.
My understanding is that when they are wee,
there little legs are chubby enough and so
most cloth diapers leak.
So I plan to use the chlorine free diapers
until she fattens up those little legs.

Also, I know they are A LOT of work.
And although I do not fully understand
the work load of a mother of a baby yet,
I know that I am commited to using cloth
diapers as often as possible.

But I guess my questions really are -
do you think it's worth it?
What are the benefits
(besides adding to the landfills)?
Have any of you used a diaper service?
What did you think of it?

Alright ladies,
time for your "advise".
Bring it on!

  1. I honestly say let the kid free, why trap her in restricting diapers? When you think she's got to go just bring her out side. If it good enough for dogs it's good enough for us right?

  2. For a first time mumma, it was too much for me to juggle (getting to know baby, figure out some sort of schedual, sleep etc.) So after a brief go at cloth, i switched back to disposables.
Everyone I know sings "Bum Genious" praises, as they grow with baby and are easy to use etc.
Keep in mind with bulky cloth diapers, you need lots of extra clothing in a size up from what baby would actually wear, and a good system for the stinkys!!!

    Go mama!

  3. I'm totally an advocate for BUM GENIUS!! I sing their praises, AND we did take the on holiday to England with us last year... I mean, who takes cloth nappies and washes them while on holiday?! Well, we did, and it saved us money. If I didn't have 2 babies so close in age I would still be using them. (stopped because I wouldv'e needed to buy about a dozen more, and they require good washing-) I used them for my first all the way thru and it worked really well for us. When/if we have more babies, I will totally do BUM GENIUS all in ones for sure!
    You can do it!!

  4. ok, we have exclusively cloted both of ours from birth (no disposables. ever. it's really not a big deal once you get it used to it; (this usually takes about 2 weeks) same work as disp just different (instead of spending time shopping and throwing out garbage you wash your diapers) i would highly recommend ME sandies and either bummis or thirsties duos covers for the bulk of your stash with some AIO's thrown in for when you're out and about. get some sized prefolds (or if you have the money sized nb diapers...) it's worth it! One size diapers are never one size! it's ridiculous and one of the big reasons so many don't stick with cloth! they're too bulky, more likely to leak etc... my favourite AIO's are sposoeasy (with snaps) and monkey doodlez velcro. make sure you have a wet bag ( my fave is the monkey doodlez simply because hey come in solids but the bummis medium is great too) also; we use a diaper pail at home not a bag... much better at no odour! if you're doing cloth you should also think about buying baby wash cloths and doing your own wipes, its cheaper, less chemicals and just as easy since you're washing anyway (i make up a butt spray, spray on then wipe with dry cloth) another HUGE benefit is we trained our oldest son at 17 mth. would have been 15 mth, but had a newborn so was too busy. i totally have more info if you like, just ask!
